Window Replacement
The process of replacing all of the old metal-framed windows
in the garage proved to be a major undertaking.
The metal-framed, single-pane windows were very INefficient.
They have been replaced with double-glazed windows which help prevent heat
loss. In addition, a Venetian Blind is placed in the air space between
the window panes to provide shading.
Removal of the old windows was very labor-intensive.
-
First of all each individual glass pane needed to be
duct-taped in a "boxed-X" pattern, to minimize the debris and danger when
the glass was removed.
-
Next each individual pane was broken out (there was no
efficient way to remove the old panes without breaking them).
-
Then the old metal frames were yanked from the window
opening.
-
Finally, the new window casing was inserted into the
window opening.
The new windows should help to significantly reduce fuel
costs by preventing heat loss during the heating season. The
adjustable blinds should both allow light AND heat to be provided by
sunlight when appropriate -- further reducing the cost of fuel. In
additions parts of the windows open to allow fresh air when appropriate, to
reduce the need for air conditioning.

The windows on the left are taped to be safely broken and removed. The windows on the the right are newly-installed. (March 2003)
New windows -- venetian blinds yet-to-be-installed. (See expanded description below)
Newly-installed double-glazed windows. Diagonal items in center of the windows are the yet-to-be-installed venetial blinds -- to be installed BETWEEN the two window panes. When installed they will not need to be cleaned, since they will be isolated from dust. In addition, they will be able to remain opened or closed to control light, while at the same time some of the window pane sections can be opened for ventilation. (March 2003)
