Three things which we emphasize are Scripture (the Old and New Testaments as the inspired Word of God, with three Bible lessons being read every Sunday), Tradition (the historic Creeds, Sacraments, and Ministry), and Reason (the God-given faculty of moral judgment). Episcopalians are both "catholic" and "reformed". By "catholic", we mean that we are part of the worldwide, universal Body of Christ called the Church. By "reformed" we mean we hold the great principle of justification by grace, defended by the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century, as a key to understanding the Gospel. We are a "liturgical church". This means our worship follows a form that grows from two thousand years of Christian worship around the world. Today, that form is found in the Book of Common Prayer in our pews. Since the time of the English Reformation, this book, in English, has gone through an evolution that produced the liturgies we use in Church today: the Eucharist (communion), Baptism, Morning and Evening prayer, burial, marriage, etc. Many people have come to the Episcopal Church from other denominations. More than half our clergy were born in some other church! In many ways, we are the "bridge" between churches of different traditions, holding to the best of each but remaining flexible about things which are not essential. You will only appreciate the Episcopal Church by taking part in our worship and using our Prayer Book. Inquirers' Classes for adults are offered regularly. The clergy will help you join them, and will be happy to tell you more about this part of the Church our Lord and his Apostles started. Top of PageSix StandardsPeople often ask, "What is expected of me as a member of the Church?" We offer these six standards, based on our six ministry areas at the Cathedral. SERVICE: Following the example of Jesus, who said he came "not to be served, but to serve," we suggest that Christian people should always be ready to sacrifice their own self interest for the needs of others -- including the legitimate demands of justice in the community, as well as the personal needs of individuals. WORSHIP: Worship is the highest activity of the human spirit. In worship we contemplate the truth, mercy and power of God shown to us in Jesus Christ. We respond with adoration, we acknowledge our failures, and we seek to amend our lives in the strength of the Holy Spirit. EDUCATION: We suggest that studying the faith is an important part of practicing the faith. We provide religious education for everyone in our congregation, from small children to adults, and we hope all members will take advantage of it. EVANGELISM: We suggest that every Christian has a duty as an apostle – that is , to spread the Gospel to others through word and deed, and to bring others to know Christ and the church. We believe this includes bringing others into the fellowship of a Christian parish. PASTORAL CARE: Responding to Jesus' summary of the law, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and mind and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself," we believe it is the responsibility of every Christian person to become aware of and respond to the needs of others. This includes developing tolerance for the differences between us, and sensitivity to the human needs that unite us. STEWARDSHIP: Stewardship is more than church support; it is the use of "the gifts given to us to carry on Christ's work of reconciliation in the world." Stewardship is more than a duty: it is a thankful response to God's graciousness to us. It is an opportunity to praise God with our lives in thanksgiving. Stewardship is everything we do after we say, "I believe"!. Top of Page

Membership in the Church, as in all churches of the Catholic tradition, starts when a person of any age is Baptized with water in the name of the Trinity. Baptism is a "universal sacrament", which means we do not re-baptize any person previously baptized in another Christian body. A person baptized here becomes a parishioner here immediately. Any person baptized elsewhere may be enrolled as a parishioner here ("baptized member") simply by asking the priest or Church office to do so. We will write for a letter of transfer if needed.
Baptized members are generally Confirmed later. Confirmation is the sacrament in which a person "confirms" his or her baptismal vows. It is administered by the Bishop. Adults are offered confirmation after study with the clergy, or after attending an "Inquirers' Class". Anyone who has already been confirmed by a Bishop with "the laying on of hands" is simply "received" by our Bishop, and not confirmed again.
A person who is over eighteen year old and has been confirmed or received (an adult confirmed communicant) is eligible to serve on the Vestry or in Diocesan positions.
It is quite simple to transfer from one Episcopal Church to another. Ask the church office to take care of this for you.
